The air was thick with nostalgia and camaraderie as alumni of Lagos City College gathered yesterday for a heartwarming reunion that kicked off the celebration of the school’s 72nd Founder’s Day.
The event, held at the college grounds, was a vibrant tapestry of memories, laughter, and a renewed commitment to support their alma mater.
Compered by Mr. Gboyega Okegbenro, a veteran sports journalist and CEO of Peachtree Communications Ltd, the reunion brought together graduates spanning decades, from the 1950s to the most recent class of 2023.
The day was filled with joyful embraces, lively banter, and a feast that showcased the rich culinary heritage of Nigeria alongside delightful oriental dishes.
Attendees savoured a smorgasbord of Smoky Party Jollof, Peppered Fish, and Chinese Fried Rice, enjoying a culinary journey that symbolized the diverse backgrounds of the alumni.
Welcoming the elegantly attired ladies and gentlemen, cutting across generations to the event, Chairman of the Founders Day Celebration Planning Committee, Dr. (Mrs.) Comfort Eyitayo, OON, MNI, former President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and member of the 1973 graduating set, congratulated all members in attendance and hundreds who joined via zoom from all parts of the world for witnessing such an epoch-making reunion.
She enjoined all members to rally round the alumni body and stand up to be counted in the association’s renewed focus to support and uplift the school morally, financially and in the improvement of existing infrastructure as government must not be left to do it alone.
She added that the event was a precursor to a larger re-union and formal celebration of the postponed 70th anniversary milestone of the school holding later in the year.
Among the notable figures present was the former Military Administrator of Ogun State, retired Colonel Daniel Akintonde and Chief Kola Jamodu, a distinguished professional and former chairman of several major corporations, whose presence underscored the legacy of excellence that Lagos City College represents.
Chief Jamodu was Chairman of Nigerian Breweries, former Chairman of PZ Group, former Chairman of UBA, and former Minister of Industry.
“This school must remain a shining star,” Chief Jamodu said, calling on alumni to reconnect and actively participate in the association.
The National President of LACCOSA, Pastor John Oluwatoyin Ojuola, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the reunion’s significance as a “homecoming.” He described it as a crucial moment for alumni to come together, rekindle bonds, and strategize for the future of their beloved institution.
“Let us wake up from our slumber,” Ojuola proclaimed, encouraging members to invest in the school’s growth.
Retired Colonel Akintonde, representing the 1968 set, recounted the school’s rich history and its founding vision by the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. His words resonated deeply with attendees, reminding them of the importance of their heritage and collective responsibility.
“We need to make sure that this school not only remains but flourishes,” he said.
The acting principal, Mr. Oluwadara Ojo praised the alumni for their past contributions, which included sponsoring students and renovating facilities. However, he highlighted ongoing challenges, such as a shortage of teachers and the need for uniforms for underprivileged students. “We must continue to support our school,” he said, emphasizing the importance of alumni engagement.
The atmosphere was electric with shared stories and laughter, as attendees reminisced about their school days. Ms. Olasumbo Oyetayo, representing the 1979 set, expressed her joy at participating in the national event, saying, “This is my first national gathering, and I’m thrilled to be here.”
Similarly, Mrs. Shitta-Bey, from the 2008 set, beamed with pride as she celebrated her year group’s presence.
As the day unfolded, the spirit of unity and determination filled the air. The alumni left with a renewed sense of purpose, committed to lifting Lagos City College to new heights. With plans for a junior secondary school and a vision to restore the institution’s former glory, the gathering was not just a celebration of the past but a rallying cry for a brighter future.
There was a fundraising session whereby members of the alumni association made financial commitments.
The school’s cultural troupe also treated the gathering to a dance performance that could be called the LACCOSA Makossa.
