Eight days after renewed calls for the return of History in Nigerian schools, the Federal Government has officially reintroduced the subject into the basic education curriculum.

The announcement came yesterday through the Ministry of Education’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, which declared that—for the first time in decades—pupils will study History continuously from Primary 1 to JSS3. Senior secondary school students (SS1–3) will now take a new subject, Civic and Heritage Studies, which merges History with Civic Education.

According to the ministry, the new structure will expose:

Primary 1–6 pupils to Nigeria’s origins, heroes, rulers, culture, politics, economy, religions, colonial rule, and post-independence governance.

JSS1–3 students to civilisations, empires, trade, European contacts, amalgamation, independence, democracy, and civic values.

The Ministers of Education described the reform as “a priceless gift to the nation,” aimed at reconnecting children with their roots while fostering pride, unity, and commitment to national development.

The government also unveiled the revised curriculum and pledged to retrain teachers, provide learning resources, and strengthen monitoring to ensure effective delivery.

The decision follows growing criticism of the removal of History from schools, including a widely circulated article by US-based Nigerian scholar Dr. Austin Orette, published on NewsmakersNG, titled Where is Our History?. His piece reignited national debate and pressured authorities to act swiftly.

With this move, Nigeria takes a significant step toward preserving collective memory and shaping a generation grounded in knowledge of its past.
