American actress and singer Hayden Panettiere, celebrated for her roles in the hit television series Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36 after being found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office disclosed on Monday that emergency responders were called to the residence at about 1:51 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, where they found Panettiere in cardiac arrest.
Emergency medical personnel immediately commenced advanced cardiac life-support procedures in a desperate attempt to revive the actress.
The efforts, however, proved unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
The Coroner’s Office subsequently opened an investigation alongside the Greenville City Police Department to determine what caused the sudden death of the Hollywood star.
An autopsy conducted on Monday found no signs of trauma that could have contributed to her death, authorities said.
However, the official cause and manner of death have not been determined.
“The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies,” the Coroner’s Office said, adding that the investigation remained active.
While some reports citing emergency dispatch communications have referred to a possible overdose, authorities have not officially established an overdose as Panettiere’s cause of death. The coroner has stressed that additional studies are required before a definitive finding can be made.
Panettiere’s family confirmed her death through a representative, with her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, describing his daughter as an extraordinary presence whose life touched millions.
He asked that the family be allowed privacy while coming to terms with the tragedy.
From Child Star to Hollywood Fame
Panettiere built a remarkable career spanning television, film and music, beginning her journey in show business as a child.
She became internationally recognised for portraying Claire Bennet, a high-school cheerleader with extraordinary regenerative powers, in NBC’s superhero drama Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010.
Her fame grew further when she starred as ambitious country singer Juliette Barnes in the musical drama Nashville from 2012 to 2018. The performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, Ice Princess, Scream 4 and Scream VI. She also voiced Dot in Pixar’s animated movie A Bug’s Life.
Behind the glamour of Hollywood, however, Panettiere had spoken candidly about some of the difficulties she encountered during her years in the entertainment industry, including struggles with alcohol and opioids and postpartum depression.
She chronicled aspects of those battles in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released in May 2026, reflecting on childhood stardom, addiction and other personal struggles.
Family Struck by Another Tragedy
Panettiere’s death comes just three years after the sudden death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 at the age of 28.
His family later disclosed that he died from cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, coupled with complications involving the aortic valve. Hayden subsequently spoke publicly about the profound grief she suffered following his death.
Panettiere is survived by her parents and her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Her sudden death has triggered tributes across the entertainment industry, with colleagues and admirers remembering an actress who grew up before the cameras and developed into one of American television’s most recognisable performers.
As investigators await the results of additional studies, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office says the precise cause and manner of the 36-year-old actress’s death remain undetermined.
