Gunmen on Tuesday launched a targeted attack on the convoy of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, in Imo State, shortly after his recent visit to detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in Sokoto prison.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, along the Umuowa–Ihite axis of Imo State, when the governor’s advance security team was travelling to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri.
The team came under heavy gunfire near the airport junction.
Although Governor Otti was not in the attacked vehicle at the time, sources within the Abia State Government told Newsmakerslive.org that the gunmen clearly targeted what they believed to be his convoy, as the attackers had no way of knowing that he was not physically present.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the government clarified that the governor’s main convoy was not at the scene when the shooting occurred
The incident comes amid heightened political and security tensions following Governor Otti’s recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu in detention, a move that had drawn wide public attention and mixed reactions across the country.
Though no official link has been established, the timing of the attack has raised fresh concerns over the safety of public office holders in the South East.
Security agencies have reportedly commenced investigations to track down those responsible for the attack and determine their motive.
