The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds in an attack by unidentified gunmen.

Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in the Fadeyi area of Lagos.

The assailants allegedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullets.

He was initially reported to have survived the attack alongside other occupants of the vehicle, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW Council, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, confirmed Ajiboye’s death in a tribute posted on his verified Facebook page.

Describing the deceased as a loyal friend, dependable ally and committed union leader, Adekunle said Ajiboye’s dedication to the union and unwavering support would never be forgotten.

“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and the entire NURTW family,” he wrote, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and comfort those he left behind.

The killing has heightened tension in Fadeyi and surrounding communities amid fears of possible reprisal attacks.

Reports indicate that security personnel, including operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), have been deployed to strategic locations to maintain law and order.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the killing or announce any arrests in connection with the attack.
