A gunman was killed and another person critically injured after a shooting near the White House on Saturday evening triggered a major security lockdown while President Donald Trump was inside the presidential complex.
The suspect, identified by US media as 21-year-old Nasire Best, allegedly opened fire near a White House security checkpoint shortly after 6pm local time, prompting an immediate response from the US Secret Service.
Officers returned fire during the confrontation, fatally wounding the gunman.
Authorities confirmed that one other person suffered critical injuries during the exchange and was rushed to hospital.
Investigators have not yet disclosed whether the victim was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or by responding officers.
The shooting sparked panic around the White House complex as Secret Service agents, tactical teams and snipers flooded the area.
Journalists covering events nearby said they were hurried into secure areas inside the White House briefing room as the lockdown unfolded.
FBI Director, Kash Patel, confirmed that federal agents were assisting the Secret Service with the investigation into the shooting.
According to reports, Best had previously been arrested in July 2025 after allegedly attempting to gain access to the White House grounds.
US media reports stated that he was later subjected to psychiatric evaluation following the incident.
Law enforcement agencies are still investigating a possible motive behind the attack.
Officials have not publicly confirmed the type of weapon used or whether the suspect specifically targeted the White House or security personnel.
President Donald Trump later thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies for their “swift and professional action” during the incident.
Trump was not harmed during the shooting.
The lockdown around the White House was lifted roughly an hour later after security officials declared the area safe.
