The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved a sweeping round of promotions across the Nigeria Police Force, elevating several senior officers to higher ranks following rigorous written examinations and oral interviews concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Abuja.
At the apex of the promotion exercise is AIG Mohammed Usman Gumel, who has been elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Gumel was, until his promotion, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Community Policing Project (CPP) Department, Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Also promoted are seven Commissioners of Police who moved up to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs). They include CP Ihebom Chukwuma (Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja), CP Maxwell Olatokunbo (K9), CP Abaniwonda Olufemi (Delta State), CP Alonyenu Francis Idu (Bayelsa State), CP Lawal B. Ayodeji (AHTU, FCID Annex Lagos), CP Agene Emmanuel (FCID Kaduna) and CP Vungmoh S. M. Kwaimo (Railway Command).
The Commission further approved the promotion of 13 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the rank of Commissioner of Police, strengthening the leadership structure across state commands and key operational units of the Force.
In another major highlight of the exercise, 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police were elevated to the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police, among them ACP Udu Moses Ogechi, PhD, now DCP Ogechi, who is presently serving as Commander, 59 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Gombe State. A doctorate degree holder, Ogechi’s elevation underscores the Commission’s emphasis on merit, professionalism and intellectual capacity in modern policing leadership.

The PSC also promoted 51 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners of Police, 542 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents, 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents, and 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents, in one of the largest promotion exercises in recent times.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, the Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), mni, charged them to brace up to the demands of their new ranks and justify the confidence reposed in them.
He emphasised that promotions come with higher expectations, urging beneficiaries to rededicate themselves to effective policing, protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to regular, transparent and merit-based promotions in line with global best practices.
The promotion exercise, according to the PSC, is expected to boost morale within the Nigeria Police Force and reinforce operational efficiency and leadership capacity across commands nationwide.
