Legendary Nigerian artist and musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo, has died.
Fondly called ‘Guitar Boy’, a line from one of his popular songs, Uwaifo reportedly died during a brief illness.
He celebrated his 80th birthday in March.
Uwaifo cut a niche for himself as a musicologist, musician, writer, sculptor, musical instrument inventor, don, and entertainer.
He was the first professional musician to be awarded the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
He was the winner of the first gold disc in Africa (Joromi) released in 1965 and seven other gold discs in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series, and Akwete music.
He was also the first Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism in Nigeria.
