Group Takes Over Case of Brutalised FUTA Student as Police Take Victim’s Statement from Hospital Bed

A civil society organisation, Social Intervention Advocacy Foundation (SIAF) has filed a formal complaint with the police over the criminal assault against a 100 level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) by six of his mates.

NewsmakersNG learnt that SIAF also offered to bear the legal expense of prosecuting the suspects.

The incident which happened in one of the off-campus hostels of the school last Saturday saw the six students, five females and a male, ganging up to beat up the victim, identified simply as Bolu, in her room for allegedly gossiping about one of them

A video of the incident surfaced online same day and immediately went viral, forcing the school authorities to announce the indefinite suspension of the six students pending the submission of the report of a panel it set up to investigate the matter.

SIAF founder, Segun Awosayan, who gave an update on the matter on Twitter, wtote:

“Update: The CP @PoliceNG of Ondo state have taken over the FUTA Aggravated Assault Case as reported by @SIAF_NG and the criminal proceedings have begun. Thank you SIAF Ambassador @YemieFash & thanks to the ever vigilant public.

“The official complaint and petition was received today as taken directly from the survivor who is still at the intensive care unit of the hospital. The CP directed the DPO within the jurisdiction to take this report and we spoke with him while at this. Justice will be served.”

Also, human rights advocate and SIAF ambassador in Ondo State, Oluyemi Fasipe, confirmed in a tweet that detectives from the state police command visited the victim in the hospital on Monday and took her statement.
