The global music community is in mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian-British Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer, Mark Olayinka, popularly known as Talay Riley, who was fatally stabbed in East London.
The 35-year-old music star, celebrated for penning and producing chart-topping hits for some of the world’s biggest artistes, died after a violent knife attack in Silvertown on Friday morning.
According to reports, emergency services responded to distress calls around 9 a.m. on Pankhurst Avenue, where Riley sustained multiple stab wounds. He was later found in a nearby garden on Rayleigh Road and was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save his life.
News of his shocking death sent waves of grief through the international music industry, with fellow musicians, producers and fans paying tribute to a man widely regarded as one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation.
Riley’s family confirmed the heartbreaking loss in a statement posted on Instagram, describing his death as an “overwhelming sadness” and thanking supporters around the world for their prayers and condolences.
Throughout a remarkable career spanning more than a decade, Talay Riley left an indelible mark on contemporary music. He co-wrote Chipmunk’s UK number-one hit Oopsy Daisy and contributed to songs performed by global superstars including Dua Lipa, Usher, Britney Spears, Zendaya and Khalid.
His creative brilliance earned him widespread acclaim within the UK grime, R&B and pop music scenes, where he was revered not only for his talent but also for his generosity in mentoring younger artistes.

Police confirmed that a second victim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Three individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. Two have since been released without further action, while another remains on police bail as investigations continue.
