Gov Otti Steps in to Fund Ngozi Nwosu’s Treatment as Appeal for Public Support Continues

Veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu, has received a financial lifeline after Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, approved funding to cover the first phase of her medical treatment, offering temporary relief as concerns grow over the health and welfare of one of Nigeria’s most recognisable screen stars.

The intervention was announced by the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Entertainment, Dr Justice Okey Martins, popularly known as JMartins, who disclosed that the state government had approved payment of the initial tranche of the actress’s medical bills.

He, however, stressed that the funding would not cover the full cost of her treatment and appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting her financially.

In a post on X, Martins wrote that Governor Otti had “stepped in on the health issues” of the Abia-born actress by approving payment for the first part of her medical expenses, while urging well-meaning individuals and organisations to contribute towards the remaining costs.

The development has once again highlighted the financial vulnerability faced by many veteran actors in Nigeria, where the absence of comprehensive health insurance and structured welfare programmes often leaves ageing performers dependent on public donations or government intervention when confronted with serious illness.

Although details of Ngozi Nwosu’s current medical condition and the amount approved by the Abia State Government were not disclosed, the announcement has prompted renewed calls for stronger welfare arrangements within Nigeria’s creative industry to protect artistes who have spent decades entertaining the nation.

Governor Otti has consistently projected healthcare as a priority of his administration.

Earlier this year, his government partnered with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas to provide free medical consultations and surgeries for thousands of residents, while pursuing broader reforms aimed at improving healthcare delivery across Abia State.

Ngozi Nwosu is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most accomplished actresses, having built a career spanning several decades through memorable performances in television sitcoms and films.

She has previously overcome serious health challenges, making the latest appeal for assistance particularly poignant for colleagues and admirers across the country.

Martins expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for what he described as a timely intervention but maintained that further financial assistance remains necessary to ensure the veteran actress receives the full medical care she requires.
