Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has described the pronouncement of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, on the South West security outfit codenamed ‘Amotekun’ as his personal opinion.
A statement from the office of the AGF, yesterday, had described Amotekun as an illegal organisation because setting it up “runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law”.
The governor who spoke with journalists today shortly after his visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, at his home located within the premises of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State also said he was not aware of the AGF’s position until he saw it on social media.
Makinde described the AGF’s position as mere comment having not been backed with an official statement, adding ”that no serious administration will make such pronouncement on the social media”.
The governor explained that the security outfit was set up to fill the gap in “security mapping” in the country.
He said his visit to Obasanjo was ”to greet him for the new year, and to offer him best wishes in 2020, according to tradition”.
He added that the former president is an elderly person, ”who deserves such a visit”.
The South West governors had announced the formation of the regional security outfit last week to complement the work of the police.
