London’s Heathrow Airport has shut down entirely for today following a major power outage caused by a fire at a nearby electrical substation.
NewsmakersNG learnt from travelers that the disruption has forced flights to turn back midair or divert to alternate locations, including Egypt, impacting thousands of travelers at one of the world’s busiest airports.
“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage,” the airport announced in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
“To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, Heathrow will remain closed until 23:59 on March 21.”
The airport warned of “significant disruption” in the coming days and urged passengers not to travel to Heathrow under any circumstances until further notice. Officials also told CNN that they cannot yet confirm when power will be fully restored.
