Girl, 12, Gang-raped, Murdered in Parents’ Bedroom

A 12-year-old Nigerian girl was, on Tuesday, raped to death in her parents’ bedroom, in a town in the northern region of Ghana.

Police in the region have arrested one suspect in connection with the crime, which occurred at Gblo-kpalsi, a waterlogged suburb of Tamale township.

Police believe the assailants were contracted to carry out the attack.

The victim was strangled with a red handkerchief after she had been gang-raped by her assailants.

According to Ghana Web, the suspect, Chucku Nonya Ebunam, was arrested at Asamankese in the Eastern region.

Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the victim was subjected to a suffocating sexual assault before being killed, while her parents were away at work.

The victim had returned from school and was preparing to join her parents in their shop, at another suburb, when the suspects attacked her.

Residents heard loud screams in the neighbourhood largely occupied by wealthy Nigerians and called the police to report a robbery incident.

Policemen arrived at the scene to find the deceased lying motionless with a red scarf tightly clutched around her neck and watery substance around her private part.

The 33-year-old suspect, according to police spokesman, ASP Yussif Tanko, fled the neighborhood immediately after the incident and went into hiding.

Tanko said he was arrested upon a tip-off and has been transferred to Tamale to assist investigation.
