Ghana Police Arrest Suspect in Attack on Nigerians

Police in Ghana have arrested a suspect in the attack on Nigerians in Accra on Monday.

Mawuli Curtis Avutsu, 27, also allegedly participated in the subsequent looting of properties of Nigerians after the attack was contained by the police.

Some youths launched an attack on Nigerians living at Sowutuom in the Ga Central municipality of the Greater Accra Region after they had received news that a Nigerian, Thompson Peter, had fatally stabbed one Amadu Misbau, a Ghanaian.

The incident took place around 10pm last Thursday and the victim was rushed to the Mary Lucy Hospital at Sowutuom where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The aggrieved youths, after receiving the news of the death of their friend, allegedly mobilised themselves on Monday morning to attack a house solely occupied by Nigerians.

The youths also damaged two police patrol vehicles during the violent attack that left a number of their victims injured.

Reports indicated that after the Nigerians were eventually rescued and taken to a safe place, some of the youths invaded the house to loot.

The arrested suspect was later identified as one of those who allegedly carried out the looting.

Meanwhile, Thompson Peter has been remanded in custody on the order of an Accra circuit court pending legal advice from the Attorney General’s office.

Peter, 48, was arrested immediately after the incident last Thursday. He allegedly stabbed Misbau in the head with a knife after a confrontation at his (Peter’s) residence.

According reports in the local media, Peter lodged a complaint at the Sowutuom Police Station a week ago that Misbau broke into his apartment and stole some items.

After taking Peter’s statement, police proceeded to Misbau’s residence to invite him to the station but he was not available.

On Thursday morning, Peter again reported that he had spotted Misbau in the area and a detective was sent to apprehend him but he could not be seen.

After his arrest, Peter claimed that around 9pm same day, Misbau came to his house with a knife to attack him for reporting the case to the police.

Peter said he overpowered Misbau in the ensuing struggle and stabbed him in self-defence.

In a related development, 26 Nigerians suspected to be fraudsters have been arrested in Ghana.

The suspects were arrested in a sting operation by the police at Ashaley Botwe area of Madina on Friday following a tip-off.

Police said they seized 36 laptops, 26 mobile phones and a number pen drives from the suspects.

Madina Divisional Crime Officer, SP Joseph Oppong, said all the suspects were arrested in a single large room in the area.

He added that the computer and pen drives have been handed over to the Police Cyber Crime Unit for further investigation, pending when the suspects would appear in court.
