The political drama in the Lagos State House of Assembly reached a climax today as Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda officially resigned as Speaker, paving the way for the reinstatement of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

At a special plenary session on Monday, Meranda read out her resignation letter, stating, “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.” Her tenure, which began on January 13, 2025, came to an abrupt end following an agreement reached in a late-night meeting with lawmakers and top government officials.

Despite her short-lived leadership, lawmakers praised Meranda for her effective leadership and efforts to maintain stability within the House. She, along with all principal officers appointed alongside her, stepped down as part of the transition.

In a surprising twist, Meranda was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker and pledged to serve the state in good faith.

Following her resignation, Noheem Adams of Eti-Osa Constituency 1 nominated Obasa for the Speakership, and he was swiftly returned to the position.

With Obasa back at the helm, the House is expected to pass a resolution to go on recess, as previously agreed, to allow for a cooling-off period after weeks of political tension.
