In response to the biting economic realities triggered by rising fuel prices, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has rolled out a targeted relief package for public servants, approving a weekly day off and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance to ease commuting burdens.

The intervention, which takes effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, is designed as a palliative measure to cushion the impact of escalating transportation costs on workers across the state.

Announcing the initiative in an official statement, the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said the policy reflects the administration’s sensitivity to the hardships faced by civil servants in the wake of recent fuel price hikes.

Under the arrangement, eligible workers will enjoy one designated day off duty each week, in addition to receiving the ₦10,000 transport allowance monthly throughout the duration of the programme.

Onasanya explained that the dual intervention is not only intended to reduce the financial strain of daily commuting but also to enhance overall workforce productivity by promoting better work-life balance and improved morale.

He clarified that the weekly day-off provision will not apply to certain categories of workers whose roles are considered critical to uninterrupted public service delivery. These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff, security operatives, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, and others whose physical presence remains indispensable.

Despite their exemption from the day-off arrangement, affected personnel will still benefit from the ₦10,000 transport support.

To ensure seamless implementation without disrupting government operations, Accounting Officers in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been mandated to determine suitable off-duty days for eligible staff.

Describing the move as both timely and pragmatic, the Head of Service lauded Governor Abiodun for demonstrating a worker-centred leadership approach in challenging economic times.

He called on public servants to reciprocate the gesture by redoubling their commitment to duty, maintaining discipline, and delivering efficient service to the people of Ogun State.

The measures underscore the Abiodun administration’s balancing act, mitigating economic pressure on workers while sustaining operational efficiency in the public sector.
