The wave of recent promotions in the Nigeria Police Force reached the Interpol Section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, as newly elevated Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Solomon Akinlotan was among those formally decorated on Thursday.

The decoration ceremony was performed by the Commissioner of Police in charge of the section, CP Bode Ojajuni, assisted by ASP Abdullahi Isah, in the presence of colleagues and well-wishers who described the moment as a reward for diligence and professionalism.

Akinlotan, until his elevation, served as an Inspector attached to the Interpol unit, one of the most sensitive investigative desks in the Force handling transnational crimes, cyber-related offences and international policing collaboration.

The brief but emotional ceremony reflected a broader development across the country, a large-scale promotion exercise approved by the Police Service Commission (PSC) in recent months affecting thousands of officers across junior, intermediate and senior cadres.

The latest promotion cycle is part of an ongoing personnel welfare drive under the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who has repeatedly emphasised that improved morale is central to improved policing.

In the past year alone, the PSC approved promotions covering ranks from Constable to Commissioner of Police, one of the most expansive advancement exercises in recent policing history. The exercise affected officers across commands, specialised units, and tactical formations nationwide.

Police authorities say the initiative is aimed at: rewarding merit and years of service, improving discipline and productivity, strengthening operational efficiency, and restoring confidence within the rank-and-file.

Senior officers note that stagnation in rank had historically been a major source of frustration in the Force, often affecting motivation and performance. The ongoing promotions are seen as a structural reform rather than a routine administrative exercise.

Since assuming office, IGP Egbetokun has consistently linked operational effectiveness to personnel welfare, including promotions, insurance coverage, improved accommodation, and training opportunities.

Police authorities maintained that uplifting officers across board would ultimately translate into better public service delivery, professionalism, and community trust.

For ASP Akinlotan, Thursday’s decoration symbolised more than a change of rank. It represented the human face of a nationwide policy: one officer’s journey mirroring an institutional attempt to rebuild morale inside Nigeria’s largest law-enforcement agency.
