Sultan Akintola Akintunde is making waves across the Atlantic. The Nigerian-born scholar was recently declared the winner of the University of Brighton’s Student Union presidential election, marking a significant milestone for international student representation.
Sultan’s campaign wasn’t just about policy; it was about community. As a versatile music creative and a prominent member of the University’s music society, Sultan has long championed the idea that students need to feel “seen” to succeed.
Sultan’s journey began at the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he completed a four-year B.Sc. in Economics. Following his graduation, he completed his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Nigeria, an experience that sharpened his civic responsibility before he set his sights on the UK.
For Sultan, leadership is about more than “corporate competence.” He brings a unique blend of academic rigor, corporate focus, and creative flair to the role.
“Leadership requires a balance,” Sultan said.
“It’s about being bigger than just your degree.”
As an international student, Sultan’s victory is a testament to the power of adaptability. He steps into the role not as a novice, but as a “natural” leader ready to advocate for thousands of students at one of the UK’s most diverse institutions.
