Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor, Justin Fairfax, has died after fatally shooting his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before turning the gun on himself, in what police say was a domestic incident linked to ongoing divorce proceedings.
Officers from the Fairfax County Police Department responded to the family’s home in Annandale shortly after midnight on Thursday, where they found both individuals dead.
Authorities believe the same firearm was used in both shootings.
Police said the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute associated with what they described as a complicated divorce.
Fairfax had recently been served court documents indicating his next scheduled appearance in the proceedings.
The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time.
Their son is reported to have placed the emergency call.
The children are now in the care of relatives, with support from local victim services.
Investigators are reviewing footage from cameras installed within the home as part of the divorce process.
Police also disclosed that an earlier allegation of assault made by Fairfax in January was not substantiated.
Describing the case as deeply distressing, police noted the impact on the family and the wider community.
Fairfax, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor from 2018 to 2022 under Ralph Northam and later contested the state’s governorship in 2021.
He returned to legal practice after leaving office, while his wife worked as a dentist.
His political career had previously been overshadowed by sexual assault allegations made in 2019, which he denied.
Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
