Former Kebbi State Governor, Usman Sa’idu Nasamu Dakingari, has been removed as Nigeria’s ambassador‑designate to Turkey, Newsmakerslive.org has learned from presidential sources.

Earlier on Thursday, a State House press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the posting of four ambassador‑designates confirmed by the Senate last December.

The appointments were drawn from a list of 68 nominees vetted by the National Assembly.

In that initial announcement, Ambassador Ayodele Oke was named ambassador‑designate to France, Colonel Lateef Are to the United States, and Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, a former envoy to South Korea, as high commissioner‑designate to the United Kingdom.

Dakingari was listed as ambassador‑designate to Turkey, in connection with President Tinubu’s planned state visit to Ankara next week.

However, according to presidential sources, the administration has now withdrawn Dakingari’s appointment to Turkey.

No official reason was provided for the removal, and it is unclear whether a replacement has already been selected.

The recall of an ambassador‑designate after an initial announcement is uncommon in Nigeria’s diplomatic appointments, which are usually finalised following Senate confirmation and formal notification of the host government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The original press release had emphasised the diplomatic importance of Turkey, noting that the President’s planned state visit to Ankara highlighted the strategic nature of the posting.

In his directive to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Tinubu instructed that the governments of all four host nations be notified in line with diplomatic procedures.

It remains unclear whether Dakingari’s removal is related to changes in diplomatic strategy ahead of the presidential trip or other internal administrative considerations at the State House.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued a comment on the development.
