FMC Abeokuta, Police Forge Stronger Alliance to Tackle Theft, Protect Healthcare Workers

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, and the Nigeria Police Force have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to improve security within the hospital, following growing concerns over theft, vandalism and attacks on healthcare workers.

The renewed partnership was the focus of a courtesy visit by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Kemta Police Division, CSP Quadril R.O., and members of his management team to the hospital.

The police delegation included ASP Balogun Latifat, ASP Abdullahi Oyetunji, ASP Olopade, ASP Christopher and other officers from the Kemta Division.

Speaking during the visit, CSP Quadril said the engagement was aimed at deepening the long-standing relationship between the Police and FMC Abeokuta to ensure a safer environment for patients, healthcare workers and visitors.

Describing both institutions as partners in progress, the DPO stressed that effective collaboration was vital to protecting lives and property while supporting quality healthcare service delivery.

The Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta, Dr. Titilola Sarah Ibiyemi, welcomed the delegation and commended the Nigeria Police Force for its support to the hospital over the years.

She said the Centre had maintained a cordial and productive relationship with the Kemta Police Division, particularly in safeguarding lives and property, despite public criticism often directed at the Force.
Dr. Ibiyemi, however, expressed concern over the rising incidents of theft and vandalism within the hospital, calling for enhanced security measures to curb the trend.

Echoing her concerns, the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Olusola Adebisi, described the security breaches as alarming, citing the vandalisation of an air-conditioning unit located close to the hospital’s police post as one of several recent incidents.
He urged the police to intensify surveillance and ensure that those responsible for the crimes were apprehended and prosecuted.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration, Mr. E. K. Apanisile, appealed for increased police patrols around the hospital, especially during night hours.
He further called for stronger police intervention to address the growing cases of assault on healthcare workers by patients and their relatives, warning that such attacks threaten the safety, morale and productivity of hospital personnel.

Responding, CSP Quadril assured the management of the Division’s readiness to provide prompt responses to distress calls and strengthen security around the facility.
He pledged enhanced patrols, intelligence gathering and rapid response operations, reaffirming the Police’s commitment to working closely with the hospital to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.

The visit highlighted the shared resolve of the Nigeria Police Force and the management of FMC Abeokuta to foster a secure atmosphere that promotes efficient healthcare delivery and protects everyone within the hospital community.
