A huge fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the Army Arena Market along Agege Motor Road in Oshodi, Lagos State, sending traders and residents into panic as flames engulfed parts of the popular commercial hub.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the outbreak on its official social media platform, reporting that personnel from LagosRescue were on the ground in the early hours of the blaze attempting to extinguish the inferno.

Eyewitness footage shared online shows thick smoke and intense flames consuming sections of the market as emergency responders battled the blaze.

At least six container shops were reported to have been destroyed, along with goods estimated to be worth millions of naira, leaving many traders devastated as they returned from year-end travels to find their stock reduced to ashes.

There have been no official statements yet on casualties or the cause of the fire.

Emergency response efforts were ongoing late into the night with fire crews working to prevent the spread to unaffected stalls.

Arena Market, a sprawling facility owned by the Nigerian Army and known locally as a hub for fabrics, electronics and other merchandise, has previously experienced fire incidents, underscoring longstanding safety concerns in Lagos markets.

State authorities, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, have not yet issued a formal update detailing the scale of damage, but traders have begun surveying losses while awaiting official assessments.
