A devastating fire has razed the largest foam depot in Iwo, Osun State, leaving traders and residents in shock.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at Jagun Ode, one of the town’s busiest commercial areas, and destroyed the entire warehouse, which served as Iwo’s main distribution centre for mattresses, pillows, furniture materials and household goods.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started suddenly, despite the shop having no electricity connection.

“We just saw flames coming out of the shop, and within minutes, everything was burning. We can’t say what caused it; only God knows,” a resident told reporters.

Emergency responders from the Osun State Fire Service arrived at the scene and battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control.

However, by the time the fire was extinguished, goods and property worth several millions of naira had been lost. Local estimates put the value of damage at over N20 million.

The Osun State Fire Service is yet to release a detailed report on the Iwo inferno.

Official records show that the state experienced more than 70 fire outbreaks in 2023, resulting in property losses estimated at N1.45 billion.

Local traders and business leaders have appealed to the Osun State government to provide relief to the affected owners and to strengthen fire-safety measures in commercial areas. They also called for stricter enforcement of inspection protocols for large storage facilities to prevent future disasters.

As of Thursday morning, the area remained cordoned off as fire officials and community volunteers continued to clear debris from what residents described as the worst commercial fire Iwo has seen in recent years.
