Portugal’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 has become one of the tournament’s most fiercely debated matches after a controversial stoppage time equaliser was ruled out with the help of FIFA’s new Connected Ball Technology.
With Croatia believing they had rescued the tie deep into stoppage time, celebrations quickly turned to disbelief when the referee, following a lengthy VAR review, disallowed the goal for offside.
The decision sparked widespread criticism from fans, pundits and former players, prompting FIFA to publicly explain the technology that played a decisive role in the outcome.
Croatia had taken the lead through Ivan Perišić early in the second half before Portugal levelled when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review.
Just as extra time appeared inevitable, substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed home in the 94th minute to put Portugal 2-1 ahead.
The biggest talking point, however, came in the 103rd minute.
Joško Gvardiol thought he had forced an equaliser after a chaotic goalmouth scramble. The assistant referee initially allowed the goal to stand, but VAR intervened after reviewing the attacking phase.
Officials concluded that Croatia striker, Igor Matanović, had made the slightest contact with the ball before it reached Mario Pašalić. Because Pašalić was in an offside position at the precise moment of Matanović’s touch, the move was ruled offside and Gvardiol’s goal was disallowed.
The decision left Croatia’s players furious and ended their World Cup campaign, while Portugal advanced to the last 16.
It also likely marked the final World Cup appearance of Croatia captain, Luka Modrić.
As debate intensified across social media, FIFA issued an explanation through its official media channels, saying the decision was supported by data from the Adidas Trionda official match ball.
“According to the data provided by Connected Ball Technology housed within the Adidas Trionda, the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup, it was proven that contact was made by Croatia’s number 20 Igor Matanović in the build-up to the goal against Portugal, allowing the referee to correctly determine offside and disallow the goal.”
FIFA added that inertial measurement unit, or IMU, sensors embedded inside the ball are capable of detecting even the slightest contact.
According to the governing body, every touch is transmitted in real time and displayed to television viewers as a “heartbeat graphic”, giving match officials “an unprecedented level of data to make fast, accurate decisions”.
The Adidas Trionda ball contains a 500Hz motion sensor developed as part of FIFA’s Connected Ball Technology programme. Combined with semi automated offside technology, it provides officials with precise data on every touch of the ball, even when contact is almost impossible to detect with the naked eye or conventional television replays.
While FIFA insisted the technology ensured the correct decision was reached, many supporters remained unconvinced.
One fan questioned another key aspect of the incident, writing: “Forget about the touch… and explain how you, the ref and VAR determined that Vega’s touch was unintentional? How did they make that determination? Do you really think a defender in the 90+12 minute will not try to clear the ball in a knockout game? He clearly tries to clear the ball and it goes backwards. The ref saved his ass.”
Another supporter challenged that argument, responding: “So you think he intentionally headed the ball back to the Croatian player to give him a huge chance? Is that what you’re saying? That doesn’t seem intentional at all unless you’re implying that he thinks he’s playing for Croatia.”
A third fan also questioned the officials’ interpretation, saying: “Do you really think he did not try to clear the ball even though he makes the movement of his head towards the ball? A defender at that level, trying to protect a narrow lead in the 90+12 minute of a World Cup knockout game, deliberately tries to clear that ball. Vega made a huge miscalculation, and the referee saved him.”
The controversy has reignited debate over how far technology should influence football’s biggest moments.
Supporters of the system argue that the purpose of Connected Ball Technology is to remove doubt from split second decisions that could otherwise determine the outcome of major matches.
Critics, however, believe football risks becoming overly dependent on technology when microscopic touches, invisible even on multiple television replays, can overturn one of the sport’s most dramatic moments.
Regardless of the debate, FIFA’s explanation has confirmed that the sensor equipped match ball has become one of the tournament’s most significant innovations, ensuring that decisions are based not only on video evidence but also on precise data captured from every touch of the ball.
