The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional parade planned for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on October 1.

Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), communicated the decision in a statement released on Monday.

The government extended an apology to the public for any inconvenience the cancellation may cause.

In the statement, the government emphasised that: “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

While the parade and presidential broadcast have been called off, other programmes scheduled for the Independence anniversary will proceed as planned.

The government also appealed to Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests for understanding, and urged support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda in the nation’s pursuit of growth.

Earlier, the federal government had declared October 1 a public holiday in observance of Independence Day.
