Widely regarded as one of the most fearless and innovative musicians of the 20th century, Fela’s work transcended entertainment, fusing music with political resistance, social commentary and African identity.

Born in 1938, Fela created Afrobeat, a powerful blend of jazz, highlife, funk and traditional African rhythms, using his music as a weapon against military dictatorship, corruption and social injustice in Nigeria. His electrifying performances, radical lyrics and uncompromising activism earned him global acclaim as well as repeated clashes with authorities at home.

From hip-hop and jazz to alternative and electronic sounds, Fela’s imprint remains unmistakable.
