Fear of Coronavirus: Makinde to Conduct Quarterly Media Chat Via Twitter

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has cancelled his quarterly media chat scheduled for tomorrow in the face of the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, the governor opted for a tweet chat with the people of the state from 12 noon tomorrow.

Makinde in a tweet this afternoon said the tweet chat will focus on the efforts of his government to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease in the state.

He tweeted, “My quarterly media chat which should have held tomorrow, has been postponed, indefinitely. In its place, I will hold a tweetchat at 12 Noon tomorrow, Saturday March 28, 2020, to address issues regarding the state’s preparedness for COVID-19 and other matters.

The media chat is traditionally held in the studios of the state government-owned Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) and moderated by a select group of journalists.

But since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, health experts have urged individuals to adopt the practice of social distancing as one of the most effective ways of avoiding getting infected.

The practice entails minimising or completely avoiding physical interactions with people. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and some other functionaries have reportedly been holding meetings via videoconferencing lately.

Also, a number of high profile individuals in Nigeria, including the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed and President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, have recently been infected with the virus.
