The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is set to sanction Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and Nigerian Bottling Company Limited for misleading consumers regarding their product formulations.

This is contained in a statement published on the agency’s website today, titled: ‘Investigation into Alleged Branding, Labelling and Anti-Competitive Practices of Coca-Cola Nig. Ltd & NBC.’

According to the FCCPC’s official statement, its investigation revealed that the companies switched from using regular sugar to non-nutritive sweeteners in their Coke brand without proper disclosure.

It said previous undisclosed changes were also made to Fanta and Sprite.

The FCCPC said these practices were potentially misleading and constituted unfair marketing tactics and possible abuse of market dominance.

It added the companies’ conduct violated the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018.
