Fayemi Scraps Levies in Ekiti Schools

Ololade Adeyanju/

The new Ekiti state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, today stopped payment of development levies in all public secondary and primary schools.

The policy became a subject of legal challenge by the Catholic Mission when it was introduced by the administration of former Gov. Ayo Fayose in 2015.

Under the policy, each secondary student pays N1,000 and primary pupil N500 as development levy per term.

Speaking at a “Thank You” visit to Ido Ekiti, Headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state, Fayemi said his government cannot afford to continue with anti-people policies of the past administration.

According to him, education will henceforth be free in all public primary and secondary schools across the state.

“Education is now free up to the secondary cadre in Ekiti State. Our children would no longer pay tax in both public and private schools

“When we were in government before 2010 and 2014, we ran free education until when the last administration came and said school children should pay tax

“By the grace of God, by December this year, we are also going to introduce school feeding from primary to Junior Secondary 3 as part of the benefits we will get from the federal government,” he stated.
