A 39 year old Nigerian student, Oluwatobiloba Oyagunna, has died less than a week after arriving in the United Kingdom to begin postgraduate studies, prompting his family and friends to launch a public fundraising appeal to support funeral arrangements.
According to details published on a GoFundMe page organised by Mariam Mustapha, Oyagunna arrived in the UK on January 26, 2026 to commence a Master’s degree in Business and Computing.
He reportedly collapsed in his apartment after losing consciousness and was rushed to hospital, where he later died on February 2, 2026, despite medical efforts to save him.
Oyagunna, who hailed from Gbongan in Osun State, Nigeria, was described as a devoted husband and father of two young children.
The fundraising page states that his sudden death has left his wife and children devastated, particularly as he had travelled abroad with the hope of securing a better future for his family.
The organiser said the appeal was created to raise funds for burial and funeral expenses and to ensure Oyagunna is laid to rest “with dignity and respect”, while easing the immediate financial burden on his grieving family.
The GoFundMe page further notes that Oyagunna was an orphan and the firstborn of three children, a background that shaped what friends described as his resilience, ambition and strong sense of responsibility.
A close friend, quoted on the page, recalled studying alongside him at Kwara State Polytechnic, where he graduated from the Department of Public Administration in 2015, describing years marked by hardship, perseverance and determination.
“Against all odds, he worked tirelessly to achieve his lifelong dream of studying in the United Kingdom,” the account said, adding that his death came just days after that goal was realised.
As of the latest update, the fundraiser had raised £717 towards a target of £9,500, with donations still ongoing.
The organisers appealed to members of the public to contribute and share the campaign to support the family during what they described as an extremely difficult period.
