The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of fast-rising Yoruba actress, Omotola Odunsi, popularly known as “Omotola the Actor.”

The budding Nollywood star, who had been gaining recognition for her impressive performances in several Yoruba-language films, was confirmed dead yesterday, sending shockwaves across the entertainment community.

Her death was first made public by fellow actress, Bakare Zainab, who posted a brief but emotional message on Instagram: “Goodnight. Omotola rest well.”

The post sparked a wave of reactions, with fans and colleagues expressing disbelief and grief over the loss.

Ashabi Simple, another popular Yoruba actress known for an involvement with singer Portable, also took to social media to mourn Odunsi, revealing that they had recently discussed upcoming movie projects.

“You said we had plans. You said I should not worry. You promised we would shoot again. Omotola, why did you leave without saying goodbye?” she wrote in a heartfelt tribute.

Omotola Odunsi rose to prominence through her involvement in productions under the mentorship of veteran actor Odunlade Adekola.

She gained attention for her roles in films like “Lisabi,” where she acted alongside Lateef Adedimeji, as well as other titles such as “President Kuti,” “Doctor Adunni,” and “Ajanaku.” Her versatility and commitment to challenging roles marked her as a talent to watch in the industry.

Before embracing acting full-time, Odunsi studied Microbiology at Olabisi Onabanjo University and had a stable 9-to-5 job. However, her passion for the arts led her to abandon the conventional career path in pursuit of storytelling on screen.

In interviews, she spoke candidly about her choice, often emphasising that she preferred to be known for her talent rather than her appearance. “I didn’t enter this industry to sell beauty. I came here to act, and that is what I will keep doing,” she once said.

Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues alike. Veteran actor Femi Adebayo described her passing as “a painful loss to the future of Nollywood,” while filmmaker Seun Olaiya called her “a rare talent who was just beginning to find her voice.”

On social media, fans expressed disbelief that someone so full of life could be gone so soon. “We just watched your movie last week. How can you be dead now?” one fan posted.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of her death remains unknown, and the family is yet to issue an official statement.
