Residents of communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State were still gripped by fear and uncertainty on Saturday as Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, visited the area following a deadly attack and abduction incident that left families mourning and several victims still unaccounted for.

The police chief travelled to the affected communities less than 24 hours after armed attackers reportedly struck in the early hours of Friday, killing some residents and abducting others.

During the visit, Disu met grieving families, community representatives and security officials overseeing rescue operations in the area.

He expressed condolences to relatives of those killed and assured residents that security agencies were intensifying efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.

According to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the IGP was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Ojo Adekimi, due to the strategic importance of border communities around the Oriire axis.

Also on the delegation was Abayomi Shogunle, whose presence underscored growing concerns over the safety of schools and vulnerable rural communities in the region.

Security sources said the IGP received operational briefings from the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, and other senior officers coordinating search-and-rescue operations across forests and rural settlements surrounding the affected communities.

Residents in parts of Oriire Local Government Area have in recent months raised concerns over increasing attacks by armed gangs operating along remote routes connecting Oyo, Kwara and parts of northern Nigeria.

Community leaders have repeatedly appealed for stronger security presence, especially in isolated farming settlements where kidnappings and violent raids have become more frequent.

The police said additional tactical and intelligence assets had been deployed to the area to strengthen ongoing operations and restore normalcy.

Disu described the attack as “cruel and unacceptable”, insisting that security agencies would continue coordinated operations until all victims were rescued and those responsible brought to justice.
