Falae Quits Politics

Segun Atanda/

A former Secretary to the Federal Government and presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy in 1999, Chief Olu Falae, today announced his resignation from politics.

His announcement came hours after the National Executive Committee of his party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for next week’s elections.

Falae disclosed at a news conference in Akure today that he has also stepped down as National Chairman of SDP.

He said he would no longer be actively involved in politics, citing health challenge as a major reason for his action.

He, however, admitted there are irresolvable differences in the Social Democratic Party.

The SDP is embroiled in a crisis over who should be its presidential candidate, between a former minister, Professor Jerry Gana and former governor of Cross River, Mr Donald Duke.

Falae, 80, was the secretary to the military government headed by Ibrahim Babangida between 1986 and 1990.
