Nigerian bloggers under the umbrella of the Guild of Professional Bloggers of Nigeria (GPBN) are set to address the issue of fake news at the group’s inaugural lecture on October 13, at Radisson Blu Hotel, on Isaac John Street, Ikeja, in Lagos.

According to a statement in which the group wished all Nigerians a happy 58th independence anniversary, the theme of the inaugural lecture is “Combating Fake News in The Cyberspace”.

Expected at the event to be chaired by the Head of Mass Communication Department, University of Lagos, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, are: the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Human Rights Lawyer, Mr Festus Keyamo SAN (Guest Speaker) and National Publicity Secretary, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Kola Ologbondiyan (Keynote Speaker).

Other speakers are Head Marketing, Diamond Bank, Chiamaka Odunze; Corporate Affairs Adviser, NBL Plc, Ekanem Kufre; Head, External Affairs UBA Plc, Nasir Ramon Olanrewaju and the Managing Partner, Technology Advisors ICT Lawyers and Consultants, Basil Udotai (Esq).

The GPBN is a group of diverse bloggers founded in 2016, to exemplify professionalism in the business of news blogging in Nigeria.

The statement signed by GPBN President, Chris Kehinde Nwandu, says: “The carefully packaged Lecture is part of the event to unfold the real professionals in the news blogging business as unfolding events in the country in the last few weeks have exposed the dangers inherent in using the cyberspace for credible messages especially as the country moves closer to the 2019 General Elections.

“It is not surprising that with the sophistication that has evolved around IT and communication, using the cyberspace to convey credible messages and information has become endangered.

“As the pioneer platform for Professional Bloggers in Nigeria, the Guild of Professional Bloggers of Nigeria (GPBN) is throwing its weight towards the global efforts to combat bogus or counterfeit news and messages in the cyberspace.

“The Inaugural Lecture has been planned to feature key personalities who shall focus attention on the menace and proffer the way forward in combating the ugly trend before it becomes cancerous to our growing democracy.”
