The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a fake fertility nurse, before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar at the Federal High Court, Enugu.
David-Agwa is facing a 45-count charge of fraud, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretenses, amounting to N28,278,600.
David-Agwa allegedly impersonated a fertility nurse and claimed to be specially trained to help women conceive, defrauding over 45 women in the process.
Two of the charges revealed that she fraudulently obtained N1.6 million from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka and N1.25 million from one Amarachi Okpala in 2024, under the pretext of assisting them with pregnancy.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges.
EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested the court to set a trial date and remand David-Agwa at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
Defense counsel G. C. Madubuegwu applied for bail, citing the defendant’s rights under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
Obasi opposed the bail application, pointing to the serious nature of the crimes and the emotional toll on the victims.
Justice Umar adjourned the bail ruling to November 12, 2024, and David-Agwa was remanded in custody.
David-Agwa’s fraudulent activities came to light when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) handed her over to the EFCC in August 2024.
Investigations revealed she had forged certificates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to bolster her fraudulent claims of being a fertility nurse.
