An explosion rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly complex yesterday night.
The incident came amid moves by some lawmakers to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Suspected arsonists reportedly threw an explosive into the complex around 9.30pm, causing a fire in the building.
The fire was later put out by firefighters who arrived at the scene just in time.
Police and other security operatives have now taken over the assembly complex, while an Armoured Personnel Carrier is stationed at the entrance.
Newsmakerslive.org learned that arrangements have been concluded by some lawmakers in the state legislature to first impeach the House leader, Eddison Ehie, to pave the way for Fubara’s removal.
About 23 lawmakers, led by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, began the impeachment process this morning amid sound of gunshots within the assembly complex.
The Speaker, who presided over the sitting, resolved to begin the process despite yesterday night’s incident.
The lawmakers subsequently suspended the leader of the House Leader and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.
The House leader is accused of blocking moves aimed at removing the governor.
Lawmakers immediately after the sitting, were seen at about 8.15am driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.
