An explosion at illegal oil refining depot in Rivers State has killed over 100 people in the early hours of today.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the site of the explosion is between Okuizu in Imo State and Egbema in Rivers State.

Rivers State commissioner for petroleum resources, Goodluck Opiah, said the fire outbreak occurred at an illegal bunkering site.

He confirmed that over 100 people were burnt beyond recognition in the unfortunate incident.

NewsmakersNG reports that operators of illegal refineries tap from a web of pipelines owned by major oil companies and refine into products in makeshift tanks.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, a non-governmental organisation based in the state, also said in a statement that several vehicles that were in a queue to buy illegal fuel were burnt in the explosion.
