The personal assistant to a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has died under mysterious circumstances at a hotel in Abuja. The deceased, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, had worked with Fani-Kayode for over three decades.

In an emotional statement on X handle, Fani-Kayode revealed, “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years.”

According to the former minister, Mark left his home at 5.40am. on Sunday, October 13, to attend morning Mass at the Catholic Church of Assumption in Asokoro. Afterward, he checked into Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, Abuja.

Police reports state that he spent time in the hotel with an individual, and “apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence.” Mark was taken to Asokoro District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The unnamed individual present at the time of Mark’s death is now in police custody, and Fani-Kayode has called for a full criminal investigation. “I have insisted on a full criminal investigation of the matter and an autopsy,” he stated, emphasising the need for justice if any foul play is uncovered.

Fani-Kayode also confirmed that the hotel’s receptionist had been detained by police, and both the manager and owner of the hotel were questioned earlier in the week.

“The entire hotel was also sealed up by the police for two days, and the room in which he lodged remains sealed till today,” he added.

Describing his close bond with the late Mark, Fani-Kayode said, “Mark was like a son to me and his passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family. We shared many dreams and aspirations and fought many battles together shoulder to shoulder.”

In the face of grief, the former minister assured Mark’s family of his full support. “I have met with his wife Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark and his Uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias. I have assured them of my intention to stand by them at this difficult time and to ensure that they do not lack or want for anything,” he promised.

Mark, who was 52, was described as “a kind, reliable, and compassionate soul who brought joy to many and who was incapable of hurting a fly.”

Fani-Kayode expressed his heartbreak at the loss but expressed his faith in the authorities to uncover the truth. “I have absolute confidence in the FCT Police Command to get to the bottom of this matter.”

“I will never forget him, and though he has passed, he lives on in our hearts,” Fani-Kayode concluded.
