The former Managing Director of PPMC, Suleiman Achimugu, died in the early hours of today from coronavirus, making him the first fatality in Nigeria where the case has risen to 35.
He reportedly returned from the UK two weeks ago after undergoing a medical procedure.
NewsmakersNG learnt that he started exhibiting symptoms on Tuesday.
The family reported to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and officials came to the house and took his blood specimen.
He was eventually evacuated from home to the hospital yesterday by NCDC officials after his condition deteriorated.
He reportedly died at 2 am.
His family have been quarantined in their house.
Confirming the development, NCDC says in a tweet at @NCDCgov: “The 1st #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded. The case was a 67-year-old male who returned home following medical treatment in the UK.
“He had underlying medical conditions – multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy. Our thoughts are with his family.”
The agency also confirmed five new cases of Covid-19 in the country bringing the total confirmed cases to 35, with one dead and two discharged.
