Retired Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar CFR, NPM, mni, has added a major academic milestone to his illustrious career as he successfully completed his PhD in Criminology and Security Studies at the University of Abuja.
In a celebratory WhatsApp post accompanied by a photograph of him receiving a congratulatory handshake from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Matthew Adamu, the former police chief expressed profound gratitude to God and those who supported his academic journey.
“Alhamdulillah, finally done and dusted. PhD in Criminology and Security Studies. Here having a handshake with the Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja, Professor Matthew Adamu. I thank the Almighty Allah for granting me the opportunity and privilege to undertake the course, while appreciating my darling wife for her encouragement, support and patience for my absence during the academic journey,” he stated.

Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s 16th Inspector-General of Police between 2012 and 2014, is widely remembered for his reforms in community policing, restructuring of special units, and efforts aimed at professionalizing the force. His latest achievement reinforces his long-standing commitment to knowledge, institutional growth, and national security development.
The news of his doctorate degree has elicited congratulations from former colleagues, security experts, and well-wishers who described his academic pursuit as inspiring, especially for younger officers and professionals in the security sector.
With this doctoral feat, Abubakar joins the growing list of retired service chiefs investing in advanced research on policing, security management, and Nigeria’s evolving criminal landscape.
