The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Oyo State Chapter, has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic motor accident involving its immediate past Chairman, Mr Taslim Abiola Layonu, which claimed the lives of his wife, mother-in-law and two other family members.

In a statement signed by Dr Rufus Kehinde, Chairman of ANA Oyo, the association described the incident as a devastating turn of events, noting that the victims were returning from the burial of Mr Layonu’s father-in-law when the accident occurred.

“The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Oyo State Chapter, is deeply saddened by a tragic motor accident involving the immediate past Chairman, Mr Taslim Abiola Layonu, while he was returning from the burial of his father-in-law,” the statement read.

“The unfortunate incident claimed the lives of his beloved wife, Mrs Rose Layonu, his mother-in-law, and two other family members.”

The statement underscored the profound weight of the tragedy, as a journey meant to mourn a departed patriarch instead resulted in the loss of two of his closest relations, his wife and her mother, compounding the family’s grief in a single, devastating moment.

A separate statement by the national leadership of ANA, signed by its President, Dr Usman Oladipo Akanbi, also conveyed shock and grief, describing the incident as one that had left the literary community in mourning.

The association noted that the accident also claimed the lives of additional relatives, including members of Mrs Layonu’s extended family, further deepening the loss.

Mr Layonu, who survived the crash, is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital, according to both statements.

While expressing gratitude for his survival, ANA called on members, friends and the wider public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers as he recovers from both his injuries and the emotional toll of the tragedy.

The association said the loss had created an irreplaceable void, not only within Mr Layonu’s family but also across the literary community, where he is widely regarded for his contributions and leadership.

ANA extended its condolences to Mr Layonu and urged members nationwide to stand in solidarity with him, offering support and compassion during what it described as a period of overwhelming grief.
