In a candid interview on NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin podcast, Melinda French Gates addressed explosive claims emerging from the latest tranche of the Epstein Files, including unverified allegations involving her ex‑husband Bill Gates.
The episode, recorded on February 3, is scheduled for full release on February 5.
The Epstein Files are a vast collection of more than three million pages of communications and documents linked to the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
They have drawn renewed attention to prominent figures whose names appear in the files, although experts caution that inclusion does not imply wrongdoing.
Among the newly released documents are draft emails reportedly written by Epstein in 2013.
One suggested that Bill Gates had contracted a sexually transmitted infection following encounters with women described as “Russian girls” and that he intended to administer antibiotics to Melinda Gates without her knowledge.
Gates and his representatives have categorically denied the claims, describing them as “absurd and completely false.”
He emphasised that the emails were never sent and called any insinuation of wrongdoing unfounded.
In a statement to 9 News Australia, Gates said he regretted ever spending time with Epstein, calling it “foolish” and asserting that he never visited Epstein’s private island nor met any women through him.
He insisted that the allegations regarding sexual misconduct and an STI are entirely untrue.
French Gates did not comment on the specifics of the allegations but spoke openly about the emotional impact.
Asked how she felt reading the news, she said: “Sad. Just unbelievable sadness… It’s just sadness.”
She described the Epstein revelations as reopening “very painful times” from her marriage and stressed that the questions raised by the files are for those involved, including Bill Gates, to answer, not her.
French Gates also condemned Epstein’s crimes, calling the abuse of girls in the documents “beyond heartbreaking” and emphasised the importance of justice for survivors.
She reflected on her personal journey, noting that she had to leave her marriage and step away from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to distance herself from what she described as “all the muck.”
The Epstein Files have sparked global media coverage and social media debate.
Other high-profile figures mentioned in the documents, such as Elon Musk, have also faced renewed scrutiny, though experts caution that inclusion in the files does not equate to criminal activity.
Bill Gates’s response underscores this distinction. While expressing regret for associating with Epstein, he maintains that none of the allegations regarding sexual conduct or medical cover-ups are factual.
