Enugu Youths Accuse Traditional Ruler, Others of Misappropriating N20 Million Government Grant

Youths from Nkpologu community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State have called on Governor Peter Mbah to investigate the alleged misappropriation of N20 million meant for the electrification of their town.

The funds were reportedly released during the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi but have allegedly been squandered by the community’s traditional ruler, Simeon Idu, and his associates.

In a statement issued by the youth leader, Cyprain Chukwuka, the group claimed that despite repeated appeals, their leaders failed to deliver on the project, leaving the community without electricity. Chukwuka accused the traditional ruler and his cohorts of colluding with the contractor to siphon the funds and bribing some town union leaders to suppress any dissent.

“We have tried everything within our power, including involving the government and the police, to either recover the money or have the electricity project completed. Unfortunately, our efforts have been met with threats and intimidation, with those responsible for the misappropriation boasting that the matter would be permanently buried after Governor Ugwuanyi’s tenure,” Chukwuka said.

The youths further alleged that the traditional ruler and his allies are now attempting to distract from the issue by opposing the nomination of one of their sons for the position of LGA chairman. They believe this move is a ploy to silence their ongoing demand for accountability.

Despite their grievances, the youths expressed strong support for Governor Mbah and his administration, acknowledging his achievements and urging him to intervene in their plight.

“We massively voted for Governor Peter Mbah, and we are very happy with his achievements so far. We are not indicting him but pointing out areas that need attention for the betterment of our community,” Chukwuka stated.

The youths are calling on the governor to take immediate action to address the alleged corruption and bring justice to their long-suffering community.
