The police in Ogun have held a 20-year-old man who allegedly defiled a 9-year-old girl on her father’s bed.
Identified as Segun Olaseni, the suspect allegedly committed the offense when he visited his friend’s home while the man was away.
According to the state police spokesman, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, Olaseni was arrested after officers received a complaint from one Adepoju Akinyemi, who reported at Sango Ota Divisional Police Headquarters that the suspect came to his house at 20, Eniola Street, New Life Estate, in Ota, on May 21, while he was at work and forcibly had carnal knowledge of his 9-year-old daughter.
Upon the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Akinsola Ogunwale led detectives to the suspect’s house at 24, Eniola Street, New Life Estate, in Ota, where he was arrested.
On interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that he committed the offence. He claimed to have been very close to the family since their homes are not far apart.
He added that he met the girl alone in their living room from where he dragged her into her father’s bedroom and slept with her.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the transfer of the case to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspect.
The CP decried what he described as the careless attitude of some parents towards their children, especially female ones. He appealed to members of the public to take their children’s welfare seriously, in order “not to make them easy prey in the hands of the devilish people”.
