A woman who allegedly drove a car that crushed two young men to death during the #EndSARS protest at the Alagbado area of Lagos on Wednesday is now in police net.
Mrs Nike Lawal, who was identified by police authorities as one of those protesting against police brutality, allegedly removed her number plate and drove recklessly before she killed two commuters on a tricycle.
Also arrested were four policemen caught for assaulting a young female protester in a viral video and as authorities launched a manhunt for a policeman who slapped an aged mother in another viral video at Iyun Street, all at Surulere area of Lagos on Monday.
Giving details of police findings in a statement issued today, the Lagos State police spokesman, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, says: “The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Mrs Nike Lawal of No. 30, Anjorin Street, Aminkanle, Lagos State, one of the EndSARS protesters, for driving recklessly and killing 2 innocent Nigerians at Ikola Road, Alagbado area of Lagos, on Wednesday, 14th October 2020.
“Mrs Nike Lawal, was the driver of Toyota 4Runner SUV with REG. NO. GGE 346 BK that ran into a tricycle and killed the duo of Ojo Azeez, 27 years and Yusuf Sodia, 26 years, both of Command Road, Alagbado, Lagos State.
“The suspect, who intentionally removed the number plates on her SUV, as at the time of the incident, joined the protest at AIT junction, Alagbado, and started driving recklessly, like many other protesters, before the fatal accident.
“The Commissioner of Police has commiserated with the families of the deceased and assured them of the command’s commitment to having justice in the case; and that the command will not relent in its efforts in maintaining peace, law and order within the state.
“In the same vein, the Commissioner of Police has arrested and commenced orderly room trial of the four policemen who were caught for assaulting a young lady (protester) in a viral video at Surulere on Monday.
“The policemen are Insp. Bagou Michael, Insp. Ekpoudom Etop, Sgt. Nnamdi Majura, and Sgt. Akinyemi Benson.”
According to Adejobi, the policemen, attached to the Surulere Divisional Police Headquarters, are now in the cell as orderly room trial continues. He said that the authorities have also ordered for the arrest of the policeman who slapped an aged mother in another viral video at Iyun Street, Surulere, same day.
“CP Hakeem Odumosu has however reiterated his zero tolerance for incivility, brutality and inappropriate conducts amongst police personnel as his corrective mechanisms are sacrosanct,” Adejobi stated.
