An online movement, which had been campaigning for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police, has hailed the re-organisation of the elite unit ordered by the Federal Government.
The group had in the last one year devoted its energy to highlighting cases of human rights abuses against SARS operatives while calling for it to be scrapped.
Last week, the group said it had forwarded a formal petition to the Presidency, detailing the atrocities by SARS operatives to justify the demand for it to be disbanded.
The group’s coordinator, Segun Awosanya, in a tweet celebrating the FG’s decision, said: “We WON Guys! #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG @julietkego @Tutsy22 @DrJoeAbah Time to build a new. The #NewNigeria is real. Congrats to @PoliceNG as we begin to reform. Out with the Old and welcome the New. #OsinbajoDelivers.”
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo today ordered an immediate re-organisation of SARS over allegations of rights abuses and also mandated the National Human Rights Commission to investigates the litany of complaints against the unit.
