A wild elephant has reportedly gone on a rampage in Innayin community in Oyo State, killing one man and leaving another missing.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, has heightened tension among residents, with authorities urging calm as search and containment efforts continue.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, operatives were deployed to the area following a distress call about an elephant invasion.
On arrival, security personnel discovered the lifeless body of a 45-year-old man, identified as Ibrahim Tijani, in a nearby bush.
Police said the injuries found on the victim were consistent with an attack by a wild animal.
His remains have since been evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination.
The police further disclosed that another resident, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, aged 50, remains missing after reportedly encountering the same animal.
Search operations are ongoing to locate him.
Security operatives, working alongside local vigilantes and hunters, have intensified efforts to track the elephant and prevent further casualties.
Residents of Innayin and neighbouring communities have been advised to avoid the affected area and promptly report any sighting of the animal.
Authorities also confirmed that relevant wildlife experts are being engaged to provide guidance on managing the situation in line with conservation laws.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, reassured residents that the situation is under control, noting that officers are working with stakeholders to secure the area and restore normalcy.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to contain the threat and ensure the safety of lives and property.
