Former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, says his two-day visit to Owerri has shown that claims of deep political division in Nigeria are overstated.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai described his reception in Imo State as “an exemplary display of a Nigerian citizen being made to feel welcome outside of his home area, amidst all the attempts at division.”
“Owerri has been a great visit. We were well-received everywhere we went, from religious institutions to political stakeholders and the traditional institution. It has been a consistent pattern of welcome and openness,” he said.
He thanked the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri for inviting him to deliver the 2025 Odenigbo Lecture, praised his engagement at the Anglican Diocese of Egbu women’s conference, and hailed His Highness Eze Stephen Kemjika Agumanu of Nekede as “a most gracious host.”
He also singled out Peter Obi for attending an interactive session despite being unwell.
“Owerri has been kind and open. We have enjoyed the time, and we leave with great memories,” El-Rufai added.
The visit drew mixed reactions.
Media reports noted that some protesters gathered outside the Assumpta Cathedral during the Odenigbo Lecture to oppose his presence, citing his past policies. But the events proceeded without disruption, allowing El-Rufai to frame his reception as proof that Nigeria’s unity is not as fragile as portrayed.
