Segun Atanda/

Over 20 bodies have been reportedly recovered from the site of the trailer crash in Iworoko Ekiti yesterday night.

Several houses and goods were also destroyed in the accident.

Eyewitnesses told NewsmakersNG that search and rescue operation is still ongoing at the site of the tragic incident.

An articulated vehicle which suffered break failure had ran into a market in the sleepy town about 7pm when activities are usually at their peak.

Uncomfirmed reports claimed that the trailer was carrying bags of rice branded with the name of a senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Senator Tayo Alasoadura.

Branded rice allegedly being conveyed by the trailer

Iworoko Ekiti is home to a large number of students of the Ekiti State University due to its proximity to the institution’s main campus.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the truck was coming from Ifaki Ekiti and heading towards Ado Ekiti, the state capital when it suddenly swerved into the parked market.

Eyewitnesses also told NewsmakersNG that those killed included occupants of a mini commuter bus popularly called Akoto in the locality.

An amateur video of the incident obtained by NewsmakersNG shows a large crowd of sympathisers wailing at the scene.
